Matthew
A testimony that Jesus is the promised Messiah and King
This Gospel is traditionally credited to Matthew, an apostle who worked as a Roman tax collector. It was written for Jewish Christians of Palestine, probably between AD 60 and AD 65, before the destruction of Jerusalem. At this time, readers lived under Roman influence while remaining steeped in Jewish scripture and tradition. The book addresses this audience by using sixty-five Old Testament references. Its main aim is to prove that Jesus of Nazareth is the promised Messiah and the true heir to David's throne, who came not to destroy the law but to fulfill it.
