Hosea
Unfaithfulness and mercy shown through symbolic marriage
Hosea wrote this book to the people of Israel before the Captivity, serving as a contemporary of Isaiah. He prophesied during a dark and melancholy period of Israel’s decline and fall. Great national disasters had come upon the nation because of widespread sins, including homicide, perjury, theft, idolatry, and impiety. Addressing this gloomy era, Hosea used the imagery of marriage and adultery to represent the spiritual relationship between the LORD and Israel. His words captured a time of deep apostasy, delivering severe denunciations alongside calls to repentance and promises of mercy.
