Ecclesiastes
A king's reflection on the vanity of life without God
The book of Ecclesiastes takes its title from a Hebrew word meaning "Preacher." The book does not name its author, but it is traditionally credited to Solomon, whom the writer implicitly represents himself to be. Others date the book from the Captivity. It comes from a period of deep reflection after a life shaped by selfishness, sensuality, and weariness. Through God's discipline, the writer learned that seeking happiness apart from God yields no results, concluding that the secret of a true life is consecrating one's youth to God.
