Daniel
History and visions during the Babylonian exile
Daniel wrote this book for the Jewish people during the dark period of the Babylonian Captivity. Nebuchadnezzar had carried the people away into exile by the Euphrates, where they served as captives until the reign of Persia. Daniel lived through these events, writing as the historian of this dismal time. His book records the history of the exile alongside several visions and prophetical communications. Because Daniel and his audience lived in captivity, he wrote in both Hebrew and Chaldee, matching the circumstances of his people.
