2 Samuel
The history of King David's reign over Israel
Second Samuel does not name its author. The book is traditionally credited to Samuel, Gad (David's companion), and Nathan, who probably arranged the text into its final form. It focuses on the reign of King David over Judah and then over all Israel, highlighting mainly the political aspects of his rule. The book does not provide a complete history. Instead, its main purpose is to show the gradual development of the kingdom of God. It records key events, including David's sin regarding Bathsheba, and closes with an appendix of various non-chronological events.
