1 Samuel
Israel's transition from judges to its first kings
First Samuel does not name its author. The book is traditionally credited to Samuel, Gad, and Nathan. Traditionally, Samuel is associated with the first twenty-four chapters, David's companion Gad continued the history, and Nathan completed and arranged the work. The book covers about a hundred years, nearly coinciding with the life of Samuel. It records the history of Eli, Samuel, Saul, and David in exile, focusing on the gradual development of the kingdom of God.
